Besides meticulously elaborated paintings, the exhibition includes spontaneous and direct drawings and water colours depicting the hubbub of boulevards and the intimacy of slum yards. Besides depicting metropolises and their colourful inhabitants, the works also enable the viewer to find hints of the artists’ states of mind: traces of difficulties arising from living abroad, loneliness or homesickness. When we compare the works created abroad to those made at home, we often see how impressions received in art metropolises were transferred to local subject matter: a bit of Parisian light or the hubbub of boulevards may appear in the streets of Tartu and Tallinn.
