At the beginning of the 20th century, Eero Järnefelt (1863–1937) and Venny Soldan-Brofeldt (1863–1945), two classics from the Golden Age of Finnish art, worked in the well-known Finnish artist community at Lake Tuusula. In Järvenpää, on the picturesque shores of Lake Tuusula, a community of National Romantic artists developed in the 1890s, with the artists Eero Järnefelt, Venny Soldan-Brofeldt and Pekka Halonen, as well as the composer Jean Sibelius and the writer Juhani Aho at its core. The peak of Eero Järnefelt’s and Venny Soldan-Brofeldt’s creative period coincided with the time that the visual idiom of the Finnish identity and national ideal was taking shape. The works included in the exhibition – colourful landscapes, portraits of the artist’s community and compositions focused on everyday life – come from the rich collection of the Järvenpää Art Museum.

Curator: Hanna Nikander (Järvenpää Art Museum)

April 5–August 4, 2019, Adamson-Eric Museum
The exhibition juxtaposes the fine art created by early 20th-century Estonian artists with art created for the theatrical stage. It shows how the new movements manifested themselves and how the artists’ paintings and theatrical art impacted each other.
