Kaljo Põllu (1934–2010) is one of the most distinguished Estonian artists and a visual interpreter of the world-view of Finno-Ugric and Nordic peoples and their ancient myths. Taking advantage of the qualities of the mezzotint technique and applying his uniquely vigorous style, Põllu created several voluminous print series (Ancient Dwellers, The Kali People, Heaven and Earth, Estonian Landscapes and Illumination). The exhibition provides evocative insight into the mythological world of our ancestors, their legends, beliefs and sense of Nature. Põllu’s works recount stories of the world-view of the ancestors, of the relationships between gods and human beings, of the creation of the world, of mythical totem animals and of the power of Nature.
