Collection highlights

Most of the artefacts collected by Otto Friedrich von Richter and transferred to the University of Tartu are now located in Voronezh, Russia, where they were evacuated to during World War I. Therefore, in the exhibition they are replaced by works of art related to the culture of ancient Egypt that come from other Estonian collections. However, Richter’s letters home to his family, drawings and diaries, and their publications are on display. They are supplemented by examples of Egyptian material culture – amulets, figures of the god Osiris, and ushabti figurines (which helped one’s soul in the afterlife) – from the collections of the Estonian History Museum and Pekka Erelt.
