When the Artist Met Clio. Historical Scenes from the 19th Century

The exhibition focuses on four topics which were popular with the art- and history-loving public in the Baltics in the 19th century: the beginning of the “European” history of these countries in the 12th–13th centuries and religious beliefs held by the indigenous populations, the earlier history of Russia as connected with Baltic history, the Napoleonic wars, and the death of historical and national heroes and their posthumous veneration. The fifth exhibition section traces the roots of European historical art to antiquity, its later developments and the European enthusiasm for the ancients in the 19th century.
