Exhibition Views 2017

October 21, 2017-February 25, 2018, Kadriorg Art Museum
The exhibition, as the title indicates, is inspired by curiosity: an opportunity to gain insight into the collection of another museum and introduce a selection of 16th–17th century Netherlandish paintings from the abundant collection of the National Museum in Warsaw to the local public. The title also alludes to the era from which the artworks originate. This period was characterised by the discovery of celestial bodies, various lands and new species of animals and plants, as well as inventions and the systematic gathering of knowledge, collections of curiosities and antique objects, art cabinets, and a deep curiosity about the world around us.

Curators: Greta Koppel (Kadriorg Art Museum) and Aleksandra Janiszewska (National Museum in Warsaw)

May 27-October 1, 2017, Kadriorg Art Museum
The exhibition, which was organised by the University of Tartu Art Museum and supplemented for the Kadriorg Art Museum, focuses on the exploratory trips in Egypt and south-west Asia made by the Baltic-German orientalist and traveller Otto Friedrich von Richter (1791–1816).
Richter, who was born at Vastse-Kuuste Manor in Tartumaa, studied classical philology and Oriental studies in Moscow, Heidelberg and Vienna. In 1814, he set out on an exploratory journey to Egypt and Nubia, and was one of the first to study the cultural treasures of this area. Unfortunately, he died unexpectedly in 1816 while visiting Smyrna (today Izmir, Turkey).

Curators: Anu Allikvee (Kadriorg Art Museum), Jaanika Anderson and Kristiina Tiideberg (Tartu University Art Museum)
Designer: Silver Vahtre

January 21-May 14, 2017, Kadriorg Art Museum
The compositions by the 17th– and 18th-century Netherlandish, Italian and French masters of flower bouquets, fruit baskets and elegantly covered breakfast tables, as well as their compositions of hunting trophies, have charmed viewers for centuries with the mastery of their painting techniques and allegorical subtexts. Along with earlier paintings, this exhibition also includes works by contemporary artists from Finland and the Baltic countries that relate technically and thematically to the still life genre.

Curator: Kerttu Männiste
Designer: Peeter Laurits
