| Description: | Unknown artist after Maerten de Vos (1532–1603) This work of art was modelled after an altar painting by the famous artist Maerten de Vos from the southern Netherlands, and has been located in the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp since 1597. The story of the wedding at Cana is rather untraditional in the iconography of altar paintings, but considering the customer (an Antwerp wine merchants’ guild), it was chosen with great insight. The tale of Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine, related in the Gospel of John in the New Testament, reminds us of the miracle of the Holy Communion – the Transubstantiation. Decorative wine jugs in the foreground of the painting also serve as an advertisement for the winemakers’ guild. This painting arrived at the museum from the Vigala church in Rapla County; in the 19th century, it may have been located in the Vana-Vigala manor, which belonged to the von Uexküll family.
