| Description: | Road To São Paulo marks the beginning of Toomik's breakthrough into the international art scene. During the first part of the 1990s he begun moving towards increasingly neutral post-minimalist process art, arriving at subjects of the mirror and double reality. He makes an effort to remove his authorial self from the simple, deeply personal conceptual actions. The idea for the work came from Toomik's observation that his birth town Tartu, Prague (where he made a performance titled My Prick Is Clean in 1989) and São Paulo are geographically on the same line. These three cities, treated by Toomik as junctions, are all crossed by large rivers. With a peculiar water rite of floating a mirror cube on the three rivers, Toomik realizes the line running across his consciousness and turns it into a physical experience. The video concentrates on the floating cube, joining the fragmentary reflections of specific towns on the mirror into a single continuous mirage. Viewers find it difficult to locate Toomik, the specific rivers, and finally even themselves, in the video image seen in endless reflections in the mirrors at the end of the tunnel. Hanno Soans |
