The neo-figuralist compositions of Alice Kask can be classified as monumental paintings due to their physical measures as well as the large dimensions of the depiction of space in the pictures. Two figures rise above the white background as a monolithic mass, from which only the delicately painted soles of their feet can be differentiated. Relating the composition to surrealism would render this a too-simple effect. It would not take into account the quiet earnestness that is dominant in the atmosphere of the painting. The relationship between total generalization and anatomically correct detail turns the depiction of the human into an anguished, but powerful method. The painting carries with it existentialist topics, such as emptiness, monumentality and pressure. Kask's paintings are self-sufficient and eternal; the interpretations turn banal and therefore it is better to stay silent. Maarin Ektermann
