Kelpman emerged in the 1980s as an exceptional painter, whose naivism, picturesqueness and quest for intimacy stood out from the Estonian painting at the time. The self-taught artist soon gained the approval of the critics and made remarkable progress in a short period of time. In the early 1990s he arrived at non-figurative painting. Despite its fiery red colouring, atypical of the artist, “Alarm Box In Flower Space" is an excellent example of the peculiarity of Kelpman's lyrical interpretation of painting. Simple geometrics create a suitable environment to develop personal thoughts and feelings. Abstractionism and symbolism might have influenced Kelpman. In his paintings the artist creates a spiritual atmosphere that renders visible the ornamental influences. Sensitive treatment of line, a good sense of rhythm and a presentation that stems from picturesque developments are justified in Kelpman's work by moodiness based on rather contradicting motifs. Although the artist's style can be defined with such terms as ‘meditative', ‘profoundly observing' and ‘balanced', there is also the presence of a tension that represents the very opposite. The artist is equally attempting to build protective barriers between himself and the world, characteristic of many artists who deal with timeless categories. Melancholia surrounded by pessimistic undertones speaks of the fragility and thinness of those barriers. Eha Komissarov
