The name Mari Kurismaa is associated with the reassessment Estonian painting in the 1980s. The 1990s saw a turn from sublime visions to a new circle of modernist aesthetics. The background for Kurismaa’s paintings has always been architecture and the play with a sense of space. Classical concept of architecture together with historical sense of time, were replaced by simple and elegant geometrical forms; an interesting combination of minimalism and optical art. The dull visions of the potential of the environment were polished by means of projectors and a new aggressive aesthetic was established, changing the entire idea of projection changes. The extensive series of paintings, “View”¸ best represent Kurismaa’s aesthetic position in the 1990s. With the series the artist managed to make a strong contribution to the development of geometrical art in Estonia. Eha Komissarov
