Description: | In the 1990s many artists discovered that it would be much more interesting to make art using materials or objects taken from real life rather than to depict life by means of traditional methods. Saag's “Door" remains on a territory between these two approaches and offers an opportunity for a further dialogue between object and painting. Many people have surely noticed the picturesque qualities of old and faded wooden doors. Saag's project develops this simple parallel by adding paint to these doors. It is very easy to show a door as a painting and kind of step brings forth fascinating cultural and historical parallels as well as art historical references as we can find several interior views that use the motif of a door. Parallels with Pop Art are not inappropriate either as, despite of certain reservations, Saag's door could be placed in the category of assemblage. By creating this work the artist saved a beautiful old door from a definite destruction. Therefore, in “Door" we could also see the ideas of preservation of antiquities been put into practice.
