Description: | These works by Toomik provide a good example of the influence of bodily manipulation that characterise his video art. They include a self-portrait of the artist in which a part of the portrait is transferred onto different body parts that leaves an extremely strong impression on the viewer. The event is described as a fact that has occurred on the basis of performance. In both works the transformation of the body begins with the genital area. Toomik offers powerful images that throw the poor tradition of Estonian surrealism on its back, and brings forth the ability to deal with transgression. The two pictures accommodate both the origin of the interpretation of aggressively psychoanalytical surrealism and the story of its generation. Eha Komissarov |
