Collection highlights
These two compositions deal with the development of a single motif. Both pictures are based on mixing the composition with the effect of the positive/negative of photography. The black background in the first composition is painted in a neutrally smooth and impersonal manner, known from abstractionism as colour-field painting. It is contrasted with what looks like its reflection - a red surface with a surrealistically mysterious texture. The image of the sphere in the intersection of the differently painted surfaces brings a spatial dimension to the painting where the sphere seems to be fixed on some sort of a pedestal. In the second composition the surfaces have changed places: the upper part is painted with a free hand, the lower part in an impersonal minimalist style. These works reflect the artist's long-lasting interest in the conflict between picturesquely painted surfaces and geometrical images. He willingly mixes geometrical images with his soft painting style visualising the irregular painting's revolt against organised regularity. Eha Komissarov
