Description: | In creating the series of paintings Vinogradov made use of the potential offered by an art album in order to draw together works by artists from very different periods. What we have here is a peculiar homage to some important figures of art history. In an era of abundance of information, these figures often exist in people's minds merely as names. The famous names also have a life of their own outside painting: consider, for instance, Rembrandt's famous beret. Vinogadov has made an excellent choice of artists. As pioneers, they all carried the artistic development of their time on their shoulders, they were heads of large art schools and shaped traditions in painting. The art historical discourse in the album becomes exhausted with names. Each work is painted on a reproduction of a work by the artist to whom the specific piece is dedicated. The names are still visible through the new surface, entering into a dialogue with Vinogradov's comment. To express his own identity Vinogradov exploits linguistic paradoxes and uses the magic of names and the star-cult, promoted through media and language of advertising. A dialogue with geniuses does not necessarily mean being lost or beaten. Eha Komissarov |
