Description: | Mark Raidpere is a photographer who gained recognition in the mid-90s with his glamorous fashion and life-style photographs. The background for these pictures is formed by ‘manerism' in young Estonian photography. Against this background Raidpere's solo exhibition held in autumn of 1997, was considered as a clear and sovereign self-establishment. Mark Raidpere's video “Io" (1997) opens up the problematic and violent psychoanalytical discourse of the body emerged in opposition of the euphoric image of the star that was widely dispersed in media stagings that dominated Estonian art in the mid-1990s. “Io" (Italian for ‘me') is a traumatic self-portrait, an extraordinarily personal series of photographs. In dialogue with the camera, the artist attempts to reveal the epicentre of his personal crisis, exposing scalds on his hands as well as his own vulnerability. In the most powerful photographs from the series, a tortured gay aesthetic intensively couples with the grotesque. The violent autistic subject opens itself up in hysterical convulsions, in a pantomime of controversial impulses and compulsive rites that serve as substitutes for psychoanalysis. The tensions that disrupt personality have weakened. The black-and-white and rough aesthetics of the series emphasise the documentary background of the photographs. Hanno Soans |
