Mall Nukke plays around with alluring images from the celebrity film industry, fashion and media, bringing them together in poster-like images and striking colours of pop-art, covers kitsch with a sweet sauce and, with the help of titles, adds religious references or lines from classical mythology. “It becomes rather clear from early on that Nukke does not principally distinguish one from the other, or the third. She mixes the characters in her art into a total mosaic and finally, with the help of titles, begins to strip out meanings.”** However there is no reason to start looking for sharp revelations or deep associations with Christianity or the antiquities. Nukke does not only adopt the visual side from the world of media but its superficial production strategy. She is neither criticizing nor fighting – she only takes inspiration from what she sees. Her attitude is confirmed with her favorite quotes from Oscar Wilde: “No artist wishes to prove anything”, and “all art is useless.” The “Muses” remind us of peculiar sea creatures with horns and patterns; they are beautiful, eye-catching, interesting, and not a single part in the fragmented whole requires excessive analysis – you can grasp everything at once and the fantasies start living.
