Allik started his series of lino-cuts in the early 1990s and he is still working on it. The common denominators of the dozens of works, made on very different subjects, are a roughly realized cutting manner and a stylish representation, with elements of popular kitsch, which reminds us of the graphic art of popular publications at the beginning of the 20th century. Allik's series of prints, with their absurd flavor, has gained a warm international reception, and works from the series have been shown in many different countries. One of the secrets behind the success of Allik's series of lino-cuts is their ironic resonance with events typical of the specific instant, pricked into a humorous context. A true representative of popular culture, Allik comments on the actuality of the present day and contemporary beliefs, disguising himself in the pointless design of old magazine illustrations. Humor as a mode of viewing the world allows the artist to unfold the world in its versatility and absurd beauty. Eha Komissarov
