“The exceptionality of young Maria-Kristiina Ulas lies in her courage to expose her drawing skills at a moment in time when making art with one’s mind is considered more appropriate. At a moment when many of the learned skills are kept a secret due to fear of degeneration and mostly only memorised truths are presented, Ulas is looking for new validity for manual skills. In numerous solo exhibitions she has proven her virtuosity in drawing, a refined palette and knowledge of composition and anatomy – all the academic baggage – however constantly viewed from a different angle and through a new staging. It appears that she is continuously experimenting – what more can be done with this set of skills and what could be her contribution to the changing times. Each solo exhibition is an attempt to find a new valid frame, context and purpose.”* Paintings and drawings by Ulas cannot be instantly captured nor do they allow themselves to be slid past. They require the act of looking and closer inspection, physical as well as mental movement in order for the long chains of images to start talking and the chaos of colours to become orderly. The giant paintings “Berries From the Dangerous Bush” and “Walk” encourage us to discuss painting as an on-going process; these works could go on for dozens of meters. The lack of a clear beginning and an end and the absence of a surrounding frame allow the viewer to start reading from either end of the picture, or even from the centre. They enter one door or another and step away whenever feeling tired with a sense of the meanings and connections have been discovered.
