“Upon her arrival at ‘grand art' there was no attempt to shock, no outer aggressiveness or restless excitement characteristic of the more extravagant artists of her generation. Siib's strength rather lies in her undeniable professionalism and in her knowledge of the meaning of graphic art and graphic thinking in general. Siib operates with images that are as laconic as a poster in their the structure, or as blissfully sign-like as a deconstructivist analysis. This kind of art is as minimalist as any coded sign can be as well as a formal and over-aestheticized concept, a highly regulated and internally tightened colour program that expresses what the artist wants to say in a single universal image."* In Liina Siib's graphic monograms there are no letters, only images that are difficult to identify despite of their familiarity to us through different combinations. They remind us of stylisized leaves or mutant characters in children's books as well as parts of ornaments or microscopic views of water drops. Mild and light tones - blue, yellow, green - alternate on mostly pink picture surface that has been divided into squares. It seems that the title of the works refers to a culture that has been unaffected by literacy, in which where there is no word to signify a person but rather a particular visual image. Furthermore the pictures remind us of coloured paper collages glued together in kindergarten. An arbitrary sheet could easily designate ‘me' as well as anything else. Anu Allas * Harry Liivrand, Liina Siib ehk edasi möödunusse. - Vikerkaar, 1993, 11, p. 29. ** Monogram - letters that are written, printed, painted or perpetuated in some other way, mostly the initials of a person's name and surname.
