In the 1990s Urmas Viik introduced a dramatic mode of expression and a powerful mythology into graphic art. However he is not a stranger to the social world either (themes as the boom in consumption, collective memory). “Wigala 26.07.1939", consists of several parts and was inspired by an old photograph taken from a family album, digitally processed, taken to pieces and enlarged. Through these actions, the photograph was given a new meaning. The significant title of the work that could be described as a visual epic, refers to the time preceeding the beginning of the World War II. There was a wedding celebration taking place in Vigala in western Estonia. The artist has singled out individual faces from the photograph and turned them into individual works that he calls mystifications, personal fictitious destinies. Anne Untera
