Description: | Jõekalda's manner is classical, based on the expressive movement of line. It has a level of spontaneity but the artist still establishes very strict boundaries: she use the dry-point technique, and there was a minimal use of colour in her earlier works. Her works that are based on the expressiveness of the black graphic line, often remind the viewer of a Freudian interpretation: the vigorous and even rough scramble of lines reflects the experience of the human body - passions, desires and emotional states. Jõekalda sees art as an intimate activity that is born out of inner necessity. The artist has confessed that the final product, compared to the work in progress, often turns out to be a disappointment. But Jõekalda's graphics would not convince the viewer if the artist did not remain open and honest towards herself. Anne Untera |
