| Description: | The opulent garland of fruit by the Flemish artist Frans Ykens, framing a picture of the Madonna, carries a religious meaning. The delicious garland refers to the plentifulness of the Kingdom of God, the cockle at the top of the stone cartouche symbolises the hope of resurrection, the worm crawling into the fruit reminds the viewer of the mortality of all flesh, and the butterfly indicates the fugacity of earthly life. When one takes a closer look at the picture, it becomes apparent that the Madonna figure by the Dutch painter Pieter Franz de Grebber was placed in the centre of the painting at some later point. It is possible that this was done in the 17th century, but even more probable that the two works were joined by an art collector in the 18th or 19th century. |
