Description: | In the style of Gillis van Coninxloo (1544 – 1606/07) The luxuriant forest landscape includes three scenes from the childhood of Jesus Christ: in the background, in the field of stubble, we see the pregnant Virgin Mary and Joseph on their journey from Bethlehem to Egypt; between the trees, we see the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus and John the Baptist; the building of a ship is depicted in the lower left-hand corner. The story of shipbuilding, in which Joseph, who was a professional carpenter, teaches young Jesus to work with wood, stresses Joseph’s participation in the raising of Jesus, and family values in general. The painting has been cut narrower from the left side at some point, due to which we can see the Child Jesus and the angels who help him, but only the back and the left arm of Joseph are visible.
