In 1979, the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian S.S.R. took the initiative to publish an anthology called Teadus ja tänapäev (Science and Today). It was designed and illustrated by the Estonian artist Tõnis Vint. In the catalogue for Vints retrospective at the Kumu Art Museum in 2012, curator Eha Komissarov writes that with Teadus ja tänapäev, “Tõnis Vint had the opportunity to realise the results of his decades-long exploratory monitoring of the intersection of cultures. The structure of the book, which included representatives from all scientific fields, created a genuine cross-cultural polygon.” In other words, when designing the book Vint went beyond the role of designer and included image material from his own collection, thus in a sense “couping” the book. And it is this take – the coup – that provides Sidenius with the point of departure for her project at the Tallinn Print Triennial. For the Triennial Sidenius has reprinted 100 copies of Teadus ja tänapäev, but left out all the original text material. One book will be bound as is while the pages of the remaining 99 books will be left unbound and constitute the working material for Sidenius’ on-going examination of the original images. Mimicking Vint’s coup, Sidenius will add new image and text material to Vint’s original selection of illustrations and print them on the pages of the 99 unbound books over the course of the exhibition period. Thus, upon the conclusion of the Triennial, a new book will have have emerged; one that visually reflects the passage of time since the initial launch of Teadus ja tänapäev in 1979 – with all the technical, political and cultural changes that this implies.
