Description: | Along the freedom of press in the early 1990s, practices of comic art increased explosively and the number of its practioners grew. Until the mid-1990s the new comic art in Estonia was the sharpest form of commentary on actual events and lifestyles and it also received an enthusiastic response among the public. Allan Hmelnitski, a member of the popular indie-band “Röövel Ööbik", represents in his rough, absurd stories about characters Kuks and Möks, a striking world-view characteristic of the punks. At the turn of the 1980s and 90s, many people saw this as the most authentic way to distinguishing truth from false. Hmelnitski's drawing style does not imitate the worn-out clichés of international comic art but is remarkable in its freshness and originality. Eha Komissarov |
