Description: | Together with Kadri Alesmaa, Jaak Visnap and Marko Mäetamm, Viljar Kõiv was one of the founders of the Estonian Lithography Centre in Pärnu. Today there is a new centre for graphic art that has grown out of the self-willed art in Pärnu that has a defiant and anarchistic reputation. This art has managed to make the old lithography technique that was in danger of being cast into lethargy in Estonia attractive and to raise interest and encourage local artists to use it. The alternative art centre balances on the border between rebellion and institutionalisation; despite of some difficulties it has been widely popular. Viljar Kõiv works as a master instructor in the lithography centre as well as a freelance artist. The master instructor's profession includes both instructing students and artists and giving technical consultation. At the same time, this method requires a great deal of self-study and experimentation. These four works formed part of Viljar Kõiv's solo exhibition Like Father Like Son that consisted of seven colourful lithographic sheets. These are portraits of the artist's father. A father of a five-year-old son himself, he dedicated this series to his father in 2003. Anne Untera |
