Karl Ormisson was Villem Ormisson’s younger brother, an "enfant terrible" who Villem painted on several occasions. Only this work survives, which at the same time is considered Ormisson’s best portrait. Karl Ormisson had been very talented but he changed occupations and universities due to his flighty nature, studying in different countries. His living and tuition expenses bankrupted his parents’ hotel in Viljandi. Karl Ormisson got married later and moved to Germany. The relationship between the brothers is said to have been cool. Regardless of not getting along particularly well with each other, the artist nevertheless decided to paint his brother.
