There is little information in the archives about 22-year old Alvine Käppa and it remains a mystery why Mägi painted her. As far as is known, they were not acquainted with each other. It is possible that someone commissioned Käppa’s portrait but Käppa herself was from a farm family with many children and there is no information about her father’s prosperity. At the same time, a newspaper clipping from that time mentions Alvine Käppa as having been one of the most generous donors in the City of Tartu.
