In art history, Pieter Breughel II is known mainly for popularising the legacy of his father, the grand master of Dutch art Pieter Bruegel I. His studio, sometimes called a (painting) factory, produced numerous detailed copies of Bruegel the Elder’s compositions; copies and repetitions were also made of the works of other well-known masters. The paintings “A Bridal Procession” and “A Presentation of Gifts” closely imitate the works made in the 1580s by Bruegel the Elder’s contemporary, Maerten van Cleve, a painter from Antwerp.
The paintings are part of a series of six satirical paintings of rural weddings. They depict the following scenes: 1) Accompanying the bridegroom to church; 2) Accompanying the bride to church; 3) Presentation of gifts to the couple; 4) The wedding feast; 5) Consecration of the matrimonial bed; and 6) The routine of married life.
Pieter Breughel the Younger’s studio produced dozens of repetitions of the series in various sizes and at various prices. Unfortunately, the series were all sold as separate works at different times.
