Venezuelan landscape with houses. A study
Watercolour on paper. Art Museum of Estonia – Johannes Mikkel’s collection. Signed at the lower right "C. Pissarro".
Johannes Mikkel’s collection boasts two small-sized good quality 19th-century watercolours, both of which have been signed. The signatures suggest well-known artists.
The signature “C. Pissarro” on the picture suggests the French neo-impressionist Camille Pissarro (1830–1903), and the motif has been identified as a Venezuelan landscape. Pissarro spent time in Venezuela as a young artist.
According to the conservation specialist, the signature was added to the painting immediately after its completion, and the pigments used in the signature are the same as the ones used in the painting.
