Dawn and Dusk (Amor and Psyche). 1895. Pear wood
This sculptural group has two titles, which shows how differently the same art work can be interpreted and how classical mythology blends together with Estonian mythology. Based on the wings of the kissing young couple, they can be seen as Amor, the ancient Roman god of love, and Psyche, his beloved. However, taking into account the artist’s interest in the mythical ancient times of Estonia, we can recognise Dawn and Dusk – the legendary heroes created by Friedrich Reinhold Faehlmann – who helped Grandfather, the ancient Estonian creative spirit, to ignite the sun in the morning and turn it off in the evening. The only time the lovers met was on the shortest night: St. John’s Night.
Amandus Adamson, who created the work, was one of the first Estonian sculptors. He worked primarily in St. Petersburg and at the end of his life in Paldiski.
