Amor as Physician. 1908. Pear wood
Since love can conquer all, Amor must have many skills. The god of love can teach the clumsy to dance elegantly or as an oculist can restore the sight of the half-blind. Therefore it is natural that Amor can also be a physician who heals all wounds (of the body and soul).
In this sculptural group, Amor is pulling a thorn out of Venus’s foot, so she can go to her lover. Venus is Amor’s mother and also the goddess of love and beauty.
Amandus Adamson, who created the work, was one of the first Estonian sculptors. He worked primarily in St. Petersburg and at the end of his life in Paldiski.
