In the 1930s, the painting was published as an item in a private collection and attributed to a renowned French Rococo artist Carle van Loo (1709–1765). Johannes Mikkel tended to think that The Finding of Moses was an early work of François Boucher (1703–1770), a friend and rival of van Loo’s.
